This version of the film is the original R18 Australian version, with some additional footage and without the dubbed voices which are apparent on the US version of the film. Extra footage includes a longer shot of Wez pulling the arrow from his arm, more footage of the rape and murder of the female driver, extra dialogue in Papagalo's speech to his people. The differences are minor, but completists will no doubt need to see this hard to find version. |

This documentary takes the viewer off the interstate highways and onto the back roads of the U.S., where a few strange and idiosyncratic motels still cling to existence. Before the advent of the interstates, and the resulting boom in big motel chains, such establishments were common. The film focuses on three such motels: The Silver Saddle in Santa Fe, New Mexico, The Blue Mist Hotel in Florence, Arizona, and the Amargosa Hotel and Opera in Death Valley Junction, California. The Blue Mist Hotel is located across the road from a state prison and serves mainly the friends and spouses of inmates. The Amargosa is owned and operated by an aging ballerina and her husband, the only residents of the ghost town in which it's located. Shot in 1999, this version of Mulholland Drive was going to serve as the pilot episode for a TV series. When plans for the series fell through, Lynch added a half-hour of footage to this and Mulholland Drive (the movie) was born. There are a few minor elements in this version that were cut from the theatrical release, and all the movie-only footage is absent from this print. There are no ending credits.
